Learning Objectives Students will analyze variations in tidal patterns and water levels in selected areas, and infer and discuss some conditions that may have influenced these variations. Students will describe how tides affect our lives and explain the importance of monitoring tides.

High and low tides are caused by the moon. The moon's gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest from the moon. These bulges of water are high tides.

We study tides for safe navigation, recreation, and coastal development. Tide stations are constructed to measure tides and analyze data so that scientists can predict tides and publish tide tables.

Tides are very long waves that move across the oceans. They are caused by the gravitational forces exerted on the earth by the moon, and to a lesser extent, the sun. When the highest point in the wave, or the crest, reaches a coast, the coast experiences a high tide.

Tides are the rise and fall of water level in the oceans (and lakes, and even in your cup of water, but they're very small). When the sea level rises to its highest point, we call that high tide. When it falls to its lowest point, that's called low tide.

Most tides are semidiurnal, which means they take place twice a day. For example, when an area covered by the ocean faces the moon, the moon's gravitational force on the water causes a high high tide. As the Earth rotates, that area moves away from the moon's influence and the tide ebbs.

Tide Observation The observation data are used to publish tide tables including forecast values about the time of high/low water and tide levels on a daily basis with respect to main ports and coasts.
