At "glass point" near Jamestown, the glass furnaces were re-discovered and excavated in 1948. Today, in a reconstructed, interpretive facility, glassblowing is again performed at Jamestown. Modern artisans, in reproductive clothing, produce common glass objects very much as they must have done almost 400 years ago.

Green is the natural color of glass because it is made mostly of sand, which contains iron oxide (rust), which causes glass to be green.

Environmental conditions related to water have always been a challenge on Jamestown Island. The colonists adapted to the lack of potable water on the island. Drought led to hundreds of deaths in the region. Erosion over the last 400 years erased a significant portion of the historic landscape.

History. The original glasshouse was built soon after the first glassblowers, the Germans and the Poles, arrived in Jamestown in 1608. A series of small furnaces were built in the area near the current exhibit.

Glass is made of the combined ingredients sand, soda ash, potash and lime. In 1608, the colonists used the natural resources found here: sand from nearby beaches, burned sea weed for soda ash, wood ash converted to potash, and oyster shells slowly burned in a kiln to make lime.

As a result of significant policy change required by the National Park Service, purchasing admission to Historic Jamestowne will be a two-step process. Visitors are required to purchase two separate tickets: one from Jamestown Rediscovery (Preservation Virginia) and one from the National Park Service.

Food was running low, though then Chief Powhatan starting to send gifts of food to help the English. If not for the Powhatan Indians help in the early years, the settlement would most likely have failed, as the English would have died from the various diseases or simply starved.
