As of 2021, Texas law no longer requires people to have a license to carry (LTC) in order to carry a handgun in most public places. See our Carry of Firearms page for more info on this new law. However, Texans are still able to get a license to carry after the new law takes effect.

To renew your Texas LTC you will not need to take a class or submit fingerprints again. You simply renew online on the DPS website by logging in as a “returning user”. You can renew up to 6 months early, if you try any earlier the renewal link won't be there when you log in.

You may apply for your renewal up to 6 months before you license expires and no more than 12 months after it expires. If your handgun license is expired for more than 12 months you will have to retake the entire course just like a new student.

The License to Carry a Handgun service allows you to apply for, renew, or check the status of a handgun license or instructor certification online with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Form DL-43, Application for Renewal/Replacement/Change of a Texas Driver License or Identification Card, is a legal document completed by Texas residents to renew their driver licenses and identification cards, to request their replacement or update the information in these documents.
