Domestic stock, agricultural cooperatives, credit unions, general cooperatives and all foreign corporations must file a statement every year. Domestic nonprofit corporations and all limited liability companies must file a statement every two years.

A Statement of Information must be filed either every year for stock, cooperative, credit union, and all foreign corporations or every two years (only in odd years or only in even years based on year of initial registration) for domestic nonprofit corporations and all limited liability companies.

California Secretary of State File Numbers are assigned to all entities in the state of California by the Secretary of State. This can be found in the LLC form that was submitted when applying for a limited liability corporation. The business will either have a seven-digit corporation number or a 12 digit file number.

An unincorporated association is defined as an association of two or more persons formed for some religious, educational, charitable, social or other non-commercial purpose.

An unincorporated association can operate as a tax-exempt nonprofit as long as the purpose of its activity is of public benefit, and annual revenues are less than $5,000. If the association remains small with limited income, the unincorporated association does not need to apply to the IRS for 501(c)(3) status.
