Form 8879 is the declaration document and signature authorization for an e-filed return filed by an electronic return originator (ERO).

The Business taxpayer (IRS Authorized Signer) must sign their own return via the approved software and should not disclose the PIN to anyone.

About the ERO PIN An Electronic Return Originator (ERO) PIN is a numeric representation of the preparer's signature used on Form 8879. It's not assigned by any taxing agency, but rather self-selected. It can be any 5-digit number other than all 9's or all 0's.

Form TR-579-IT must be completed to authorize an ERO to e-file a personal income tax return and to transmit bank account information for the electronic funds withdrawal.

You're required to electronically file your return if you meet all three of the following conditions: you use software to prepare your own personal income tax return; and. your software supports the electronic filing of your return; and. you have broadband Internet access.

Court-appointed or court-certified personal representatives must attach to the return a copy of the court document showing the appointment. If there's an appointed personal representative, he or she must sign the return. If it's a joint return, the surviving spouse must also sign it.

Is there a difference between an ERO and a paid preparer? Many paid tax preparers are EROs. But an ERO may also electronically file returns that were collected from a taxpayer. An ERO can also arrange with another authorized IRS e-file provider to transmit the return.

Form 8879, IRS e-file Signature Authorization, must be signed by the taxpayer / spouse. The preparer provides the taxpayer / spouse with a signed copy of the return; Form 8879, IRS e-file Signature Authorization; and original Forms 1099-R, W-2, and W-2G.
