Malt liquor isn't liquor and barley wine isn't actually wine. They're both different terms for strong beer. There is a liquor that's made by fermenting a mash made from malted barley then distilling it, but it has a different name- whiskey.

Malt liquor is typically enjoyed by those who are looking for a stronger drink, and it can be used in cocktails or enjoyed on its own. While there are many different brands of malt liquor available, they all have one thing in common: they pack a punch!

While traditional premium lager is made primarily from barley, water, and hops, malt liquors tend to make much greater use of inexpensive adjuncts such as corn, rice, or dextrose.

Malt liquor is made with either a very low concentration of hops, or none at all. This, along with the sugar added to increase the ABV, means malt liquor is a lot sweeter and fruitier than regular beer. And it's fizzier than regular beer because there is more sugar, which the yeast breaks down into carbon dioxide.

NOTE: In order for a brewery product to fall within the definition of a “malt beverage” under the FAA Act, it must be a fermented beverage made from both malted barley and hops, or their parts, or their products.

Popular examples of FMBs are Mike's Hard Lemonade, Redd's Apple Ale, Kinky Cocktails, and Four Loko. To remain in the malt beverage category for tax purposes, FMBs must still be made with a legal malt base, and at least 51% of the final alcohol in the product must be derived from that malt base.

Malt liquor is an alcoholic beverage that is typically made from grains, such as barley or corn. These grains are then mixed with water and yeast to create a mash, which is then fermented. The resulting liquid is then distilled and often flavored with hops before it is bottled.

Malt liquor is usually stronger than regular beer, with an alcohol content ranging from 4% to 7%. A specific kind of beer known as malt liquor has a very high percentage of alcohol by volume.
