A request for an extension of time to respond in California is authorized by Code of Civil Procedure section 1054(a) which allows a judge to grant an extension of tine not exceeding 30 days to respond to a complaint upon a showing of good cause.

The parties may stipulate without leave of court to one 15-day extension beyond the 30-day time period prescribed for the response after service of the initial complaint.

(1) Except as provided in (2) and (3), a notice of appeal must be filed within 60 days after the rendition of the judgment or the making of the order being appealed.

(1) If produced on a computer, an opening or answering brief on the merits must not exceed 14,000 words, including footnotes, and a reply brief on the merits must not exceed 8,400 words, including footnotes.
