“Patch testing” is done by taping “allergens” under “patches” to your back and leaving them on for 48 hours. The patches are then removed, and under the areas examined for signs of a reaction. The back is then checked again two days later.

The purpose of patch testing is to determine if your skin rash is caused by an allergy to certain chemicals that come in contact with your skin. The test is done with chemicals placed on tape then placed on your back. This is not the same test done by your immunologist or allergist. It is a weeklong procedure.

A professional allergy patch test is a safe, effective way to diagnose contact allergies so you can learn which everyday chemicals, soaps, fabrics, or other materials you should avoid so you don't get skin irritation.

Positive reactions become red and itchy at the test site and usually become apparent by the Wednesday reading, although they can occasionally take longer. Your patch tests may be negative. This is helpful since, as far as we can, we will have eliminated contact allergy as a cause of your skin problem.

Visual imprints on the skin from each chamber + a slight erythema from the frames should be visible as a sign of good occlusion. Reading of the test is preferably performed at day 3 or 4 plus at day 7 after test application for haptens that may show delayed reactions.

What Does a Positive Patch Test Result Look Like? A positive patch test result ranges from a small skin rash with a little swelling to red bumps, blisters, and wheals. The more severe the reaction, the more sensitized you are to the allergen.

About 15 minutes after the skin pricks, the nurse observes your skin for signs of allergic reactions. If you are allergic to one of the substances tested, you'll develop a raised, red, itchy bump (wheal) that may look like a mosquito bite. The nurse will then measure the bump's size and record the results.

Each patch contains an allergen known to cause allergic contact dermatitis. Your doctor may draw gridlines on your skin with a black marker to measure the extent of each reaction.
