You may need a residence permit if you want to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days. Depending on your nationality and the purpose of your stay you may also need to apply for a long-stay visa before you travel to the Netherlands.

If your family member or relative does not need an mvv, you can submit an application for a residence permit. You are advised to do so while your family member or relative is still abroad. Once the IND has indicated it will issue a residence permit, your family member or relative can come to the Netherlands.

If you are travelling to the Netherlands and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

Many people know that there are two types of permanent residence permits in the Netherlands: the regular Dutch indefinite permit (“regulier onbepaalde tijd” or Type II permit) and the EU long term permit (“EU langdurig ingezetene” or Type V permit).

What if you do not have the nationality of a Schengen country but do have a valid Dutch residence permit? Then you are allowed to be in all countries of the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Besides your passport or other travel document, take your residence permit with you when you travel.

You do not need a visa when transiting in the Netherlands. However, your travel document must still be valid for at least another 6 months when you leave the Netherlands or another Schengen country.

If you want to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days, you may need a residence permit. In many cases you will also have to apply for a long-stay visa before you travel to the Netherlands. This visa is also called an authorisation for temporary stay (MVV).

You can stay in the Netherlands without a visa for a maximum of 90 days in a 180-day period.
