Metropolitan River Protection Act (Georgia Code 12-5-440 et seq.) was enacted in 1973 by the Georgia General Assembly to establish a 2000-foot Corridor along the banks of the Chattahoochee River and its impoundments for the 48 miles between Buford Dam and Peachtree Creek.

Like other southeastern states, Georgia relies heavily on ground water to meet its population's needs. The state's southern half lies abov e the 100,000-square- mile Floridian aquifer—one of the world's most productive groundwater resources and a principal water supply for Georgia and other southeastern states.

The Chattahoochee River is the largest river in metro Atlanta and one of the region's most valuable resources, serving as the primary source of drinking water for millions of residents.

The Chattahoochee River provides more than 70% of metro Atlanta's drinking water to approximately five million people. Yet the watershed area north of Atlanta is among the nation's smallest to serve a major metropolitan area.

Collectively, the Chattahoochee River and these two reservoirs accounts for approximately 80% of the metro region's water supply. The “Tri-State Water Wars” litigation began in 1990 when Alabama sued the Corps to prevent it from providing additional water to metro Atlanta from Lake Lanier and Allatoona Lake.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates five large reservoirs along the Chattahoochee River: Buford Dam (Lake Lanier); West Point Dam; Walter F. George Lock and Dam; George W. Andrews Lock and Dam; and Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam (Lake Seminole).

From its source in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Chattahoochee River flows southwesterly to Atlanta and through its suburbs. It eventually turns due-south to form the southern half of the Georgia/Alabama state line.
