Ad valorem taxes are due each year on all vehicles whether they are operational or not, even if the tag or registration renewal is not being applied for. Taxes must be paid by the last day of your registration period (birthday) to avoid a 10% penalty.

Title Ad Valorem Tax or (TAVT) is a new form of taxation upon motor vehicles all across the State of Georgia. The tax replaces Sales Tax and Annual Ad Valorem Tax and instead utilizes a one-time tax. This tax is calculated by multiplying the fair market value of the vehicle with the current tax rate of 7%.

Currently, TAVT is 7.0%* of the retail value, assessed value established by the Georgia Department of Revenue, or "clean retail" value shown by the NADA. Vehicles subject to TAVT are exempt from sales tax.

Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) Rate Changing to 7 Percent The temporary title ad valorem tax (TAVT) reduction provided by the General Assembly in 2020 will expire on June 30, 2023. Beginning July 1, 2023, the TAVT rate will return to a rate equal to 7 percent of the fair market value of the motor vehicle.

Explanation of Property Taxes The basis for ad valorem taxation is the fair market value of the property, which is established January 1 of each year. The tax is levied on the assessed value of the property which, by law, is established at 40% of the fair market value.

Any vehicle purchased from a dealer or individual on or after March 1, 2013, is subject to a one-time title tax based on the value of the vehicle. The title tax replaces the annual ad valorem tax and the sales and use tax on most vehicles titled in Georgia.

This tax law (Annual Ad Valorem Tax) is calculated by the vehicle values set by the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Division and multiplied by the mill rate set by the governing authorities (state, school, county, water authority).

Individuals have 30 calendar days after establishing residency to register their vehicle. New residents are required to pay a one-time title ad valorem tax (title tax) of 3%. The full amount is due upon titling any motor vehicle. For an estimate of the TAVT, please visit the Department of Revenue's TAVT estimator.
