The new Safety Data Sheets carry on the same mission of the MSDS, but have been upgraded to increase how easy it is to read and understand the chemical's risks. This means there are more sections and more streamlined phrases present on a SDS.

The main difference between an MSDS and an SDS is the standardized formatting. All SDSs follow the GHS's 16 section formatting, while MSDSs could come in many different formats depending on the organization. Beyond that, they aim to convey the same information regarding chemical hazards.

The new standard — the SDS, which officially replaced the MSDS — saw many improvements in consistency and format and is the ongoing standard for health and safety information on hazardous chemicals.

MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is now called an SDS (Safety Data Sheet). The purpose of both MSDS and SDS documents remains unchanged and is to list the information pertaining to the occupational health and safety for the various uses of the substances and products.

To obtain SDS, get them from the manufacturer. They may be sent with the chemical order (paper copy or e-mail attachment). Otherwise, go to the manufacturer's website and download it or request a copy.

Safety data sheets are created by the manufacturer and/or distributor of the hazardous chemical. SDSs are updated by the chemical manufacturer or distributor within three months of learning of "new or significant information" regarding the chemical's hazard potential.

When new regulatory information, such as exposure limits, or new health effects information becomes available, the MSDS must be updated to reflect it. Employers and employees need the information contained on MSDSs to protect themselves from hazardous chemical exposures and to work safely with chemical products.

The public has a right to MSDS data upon request. They must be written in English and contain: the name of the chemical (same as on the label) the chemical and common names of the substance.
