It should be transparent. It should be free from impurities such as suspended solids. It should contain some minerals and salts, necessary for our body and some dissolved gases to add taste. It should be free from harmful microorganisms.

Pure water is neutral, with a pH close to 7.0 at 25°C. Normal rainfall has a pH of approximately 5.6 (slightly acidic) owing to atmospheric carbon dioxide gas [10]. Safe ranges of pH for drinking water are from 6.5 to 8.5 for domestic use and living organisms need [24].

Potable water, also known as drinking water, comes from surface and ground sources and is treated to levels that that meet state and federal standards for consumption. Water from natural sources is treated for microorganisms, bacteria, toxic chemicals, viruses and fecal matter.

In general, potable water is considered to be below 1000 ppm TDS. The World Health Organization has established 250 ppm as a taste-derived acceptable drinking-water limit.
