Understanding PAM4 For PAM4 signals, the baud rate equals one-half the bit rate and the Nyquist frequency equals one-fourth the bit rate. Compared to PAM2/NRZ, essentially, PAM4 cuts the bandwidth for a given data rate in half by transmitting two bits in each symbol.

It is commonly used in the 28GHz range and for some 56GHz channels. PAM-4 has half the Nyquist frequency and twice the throughput for the same Baud rate compared to NRZ.

PAM4 Modulation utilizes four different signal levels during data transmission, with each symbol representing two bits of information. At each of the four levels, the data bits are logically presented in combinations of 00, 01, 10, or 11.

Comparison of NRZ and PAM4 (logic and eye diagram): PAM4 uses four voltage levels to represent 4 combinations of 2 bits logic: 11, 10, 01, and 00. With NRZ, you get two bits per clock cycle, and with PAM4, you get four bits per clock cycle. This allows you to double your bandwidth for a given clock cycle with PAM4.

While 56Gbps PAM4 will have a line transmission at 28GBdps since PAM4 transmits 2 bits per symbol. Therefore, PAM4 increases efficiency for high-speed optical transmission like 400G by doubling the bit rate for a given baud rate over NRZ.

Pulse Amplitude Modulation-4 (PAM-4) is a four-level modulation scheme used for data transmission greater than 28 Gbps. PAM-4 encodes two bits into 1 symbol. There are, therefore, four signal levels, as two bits have four unique combinations.

Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level (PAM4) is a multilevel signal modulation format used to transmit signal. Each signal level can represent 2 bits of logic information.
