Rabies testing in animals is performed using a direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) to stain fresh brain tissue. Full cross sections of the brainstem and cerebellum are required for a valid test. The head of the animal should be refrigerated and shipped as soon as possible after death.

While fresh frozen (unfixed) tissues are preferred for rabies testing, a diagnosis may be made using formalin-fixed tissues, which are shipped at room (ambient) temperature; however, processing of these samples requires additional time, which may delay results up to a week or more.

The brain must remain intact for the bat to be tested for rabies. If the bat is dead, keep it cool, but avoid freezing. If the bat has been inadvertently frozen, it is still worthwhile to submit it as many will still be testable.

Laboratory testing Rabies testing in animals is performed using a direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) to stain fresh brain tissue. Full cross sections of the brainstem and cerebellum are required for a valid test. The head of the animal should be refrigerated and shipped as soon as possible after death.

Before sending any samples, you must first contact the Rabies Laboratory. Contact information is listed in the description of each test (see links above). Individuals other than those listed above may not submit specimens directly to CDC. If you are a patient, please contact your physician or local health department.

A diagnosis of rabies can be made after detection of rabies virus from any part of the affected brain, but in order to rule out rabies, the test must include tissue from at least two locations in the brain, preferably the brain stem and cerebellum. The test requires that the animal be euthanized.

The rabies virus can survive on inanimate objects for as long as it takes the saliva to completely dry. Sunlight will kill the virus, but freezing and moisture can preserve it. The virus is killed by most disinfectants.

Specimen Collection The animal should be humanely euthanized without damage to the head. The head must then be removed from the body and submitted intact for examination except in the case of bats where the entire animal should be submitted.
