While domestic violence continues to be an epidemic globally, the problem is apparently worse within military families. Numerous studies have indicated that the rates of domestic violence within military households are substantially greater than those in the civilian population.

Today, the Navy Family Advocacy Program is designed to address the prevention, identification, treatment, follow-up, and reporting of child abuse and neglect and spouse abuse.

Examples include intimidation, coercion, ridiculing, harassment, treating an adult like a child, isolating an adult from family, friends, or regular activity, use of silence to control behavior, and yelling or swearing which results in mental distress.

The military considers domestic abuse to be a pattern of behavior resulting in emotional/psychological abuse, economic control, sexual abuse, “spousal neglect,” and/or interference with personal liberty.

You will receive a dishonorable discharge. The military does not tolerate domestic abuse or violence. Therefore, you may have your military status discharged, even if you are only issued a protection order and not convicted. If you are convicted, you will be discharged and unable to re-enlist.

Military domestic violence is, sadly, more of a common occurrence than many may think. In the United States, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men have experienced some sort of intimate partner violence, and nearly 20 people a minute are physically abused by an intimate partner.
