Official Site of The State of New Jersey The owners of all dogs seven months of age or older are required to annually apply to the licensing clerk of the municipality in which he or she resides for a dog license.

Violators will be cited up to $300 per violation, plus court costs. There are two types of licenses: an annual license and a lifetime license. Purchase an annual dog license online with a credit/debit card or echeck.

At the statewide level, New Jersey does not have any laws limiting the number of dogs and cats one household can own, says Mike Cerra, executive director of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.

Cats are required to get a license when they are old enough to get a rabies vaccination. This is generally when they are three months of age or older. How often must licenses be renewed? Licenses must be renewed every year or every three years (depending on the cat's license expiration date) before July 31st.

In some communities, your pet's license means a free trip home if they're found by local animal control. Without a license, it might mean an expensive overnight stay at the municipal animal shelter. Licensed dogs are kept longer at shelters, and are less likely to be euthanized than unlicensed dogs are.

IT'S THE LAW In New Jersey, it's mandatory that dog owners have their pets licensed. If you get caught without a license, you will be hit with a hefty fine. Dogs must have a renewed license each year, which must be displayed on them at all times.

Dogs seven months of age or older must be licensed annually through the municipality where the owner lives. The owner must present proof that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian, and that its immunity will extend through at least ten months of the twelve-month license period.

Applications for licenses are available in Room B-17, at City Hall, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. City Hall is located at 920 Broad Street. Applicants for dog licenses must present the dog or dogs' certificates of vaccination when applying for the license.
