Special Olympics is for people who are different because they learn new skills slowly. They are different in other ways as well. They have an intellectual disability, or ID. Intellectual disabilities happen in all cultures, races and countries.

To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, athletes must have an intellectual disability; a cognitive delay, or a development disability, that is, functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills. (They may also have a physical disability.)

Furthermore it is recommended that all Special Olympics athletes update their medical form completely every three years, if not more frequently. NOTE: There is a separate registration form and a release form that should accompany the medical form for any new or re-registering Special Olympics athlete.

Myth #2: Everyone Gets a Medal At Special Olympics, we award three medals: gold for first place in a division, silver for second, and bronze for third. What is the Special Olympics athlete oath? "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, you must be at least 8 years old and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disabilities, cognitive delays as measured by formal assessment, or significant learning or vocational problems due to cognitive delay ...

The Special Olympics welcomes all athletes with intellectual disabilities, of all ability levels, ages 8 and up. Paralympic athletes must fulfill certain criteria and meet qualifying standards in order to be eligible. This story first appeared on the Morning Edition live blog.

Special Olympics World Games take place every two years and alternate between Summer and Winter Games, a schedule similar to the Olympics and Paralympics.
