Whenever the GPA for a given semester is below 2.0, but the cumulative GPA is at or above the required minimum for satisfactory academic progress, the student receives an academic warning. This warning alerts the student to potential difficulties and to potential loss of financial aid eligibility.

Simply put, academic dismissal means being asked to leave the school because of continued poor academic performance. It doesn't mean your student can never go to college again; it just means they have to put a stop to their education at their current institution for the time being.

A student is placed on academic warning at the end of any semester that his/her cumulative GPA is less than a 2.0. A student is placed on academic probation if his/her cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 for two successive semesters.

Academic Probation is the academic standing of students whose term or cumulative GPA is below 2.0. A hold is placed on the student's' record requiring them to meet with their advisor before being able to register for courses.

Example One: "Student just completed their first semester at Southern and has a cumulative GPA of 1.8, putting them on Academic Warning." Explanation: This student is on Academic Warning because this is the first semester in which their cumulative GPA has fallen below 2.0.

If the student achieves a 2.0 GPA for the spring semester, the student is allowed to remain at the college on probationary status, despite a SAC/SCC cumulative GPA of less than 2.0. If the 2.0 GPA for spring is NOT achieved, the student is academically dismissed.

An academic alert is a warning sent to you if you are at risk of encountering academic problems. Most academic alerts are issued because of absence from a compulsory element, or failure to submit coursework.
