Before Lowe's invention, people kept their cats outside, using ashes, dirt or sand as cat litter when it was necessary to keep them inside. One day in January 1947, Mrs. Draper, Edward Lowe's neighbor in Cassopolis, Michigan, asked him for some sand to use as cat litter.

During cats' history outdoors, they gravitated toward soft dirt or sand, given the granular consistency that made it easier to bury their waste. For this reason, modern indoor cats are naturally attracted to the feel of cat litter beneath their paws.

Unlike other fillers, this clay litter absorbed moisture and odor, and was less likely to be tracked all over the house. This humble beginning in 1947 led to the world we now know today. The invention—or discovery—of clay pan filler has been so momentous that some suggest it has led to a steady uptick in cat ownership.

Invention of cat litter Before Lowe's invention, people kept their cats outside, using ashes, dirt or sand as cat litter when it was necessary to keep them inside. One day in January 1947, Mrs. Draper, Edward Lowe's neighbor in Cassopolis, Michigan, asked him for some sand to use as cat litter.

Seventy years ago this month, Edward Lowe created Kitty Litter. He fought hard to market his product and it took him years to convince skeptical cat owners that his product was better than sand. AUDIE CORNISH, HOST: It's not every man who can make history by thinking inside the box.

In 1947 Ed was approached by a neighbor who was tired of using ashes in her cat's litter box and the resulting sooty paw prints. She asked for some sand, but Ed suggested clay instead. Soon the neighbor would use nothing else, noting that the clay was much more absorbent than sand and didn't track all over the house.
