Nearly every party on a California construction project will need to send a preliminary 20-day notice within 20 days of first furnishing labor or materials to the project to secure their rights to file a mechanics lien.

Subcontractors and materialmen must file a California claim of lien within 30 days after a notice of completion or notice of cessation is recorded, or if no recording of completion or cessation is accomplished, within 90 days after the completion of the work of improvement.

California's deadline to file a mechanics lien is 90 days after the completion of the project as a whole. However, if a notice of completion or cessation was filed, the deadline for subcontractors, suppliers, and other sub-tier parties is shortened to 30 days from the date the notice was filed.
