Recloser controls provide fault location, isolation, and system restoration using protection and communications capabilities, such as Automatic Network Reconfiguration and single- and three-phase tripping.

Automatic Circuit Recloser (ACR) is an intellectual protective device capable of interrupting fault current and which purpose is to increase distribution system reliability. Their function is to automatically disconnect a section of feeder in the event of fault, such as a short circuit.

Each sectionalizer detects and counts fault current interruptions by the recloser (or circuit breaker). After a pre-determined number of interruptions, the sectionalizer will open, thereby isolating the faulty section of the circuit, allowing the recloser to restore supply to the other non-fault sections.

Also known as reclosers or autoreclosers, ACRs are essentially rated circuit breakers with integrated current and voltage sensors and a protection relay, optimized for use as a protection asset.

Recloser control types There are two basic types of control schemes used; an integral hydraulic control or a control located in a separate cabinet.

What is a recloser? A recloser is an automatic, high-voltage electric switch. Like a circuit breaker on household electric lines, it shuts off electric power when trouble occurs, such as a short circuit.

It will typically open again for a second fast operation.

The Kyle Type NOVA recloser is a three-phase, vacuum-interrupting recloser designed for three-phase electrical distribution systems through 34.5 kV.

Reclosers are small circuit breakers located at the top of distribution poles and are typically used on very long distribution feeders. Their function is to isolate a section of the feeder in fault or overload conditions and thereby minimize the number of customers without service.

A circuit breaker typically uses a spring mechanism to open and close. A recloser has a permanent magnet mechanism and has fewer parts, is maintenance-free, and can automatically open and close a circuit. Both circuit breakers and reclosers have control systems that are separate from each other.
