When purchasing a handgun in North Carolina, you need a current, valid NC state-issued form of identification and either an NC Pistol Purchase Permit or a North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun permit.

The fee for a concealed handgun permit is $50.00. Make your check payable to Clerk of Circuit Court if you apply at the Circuit Court Clerk's Office or payable to the City of Virginia Beach if you apply at the Virginia Beach Police Department.

Visit the Department of State Police Web site for helpful information and an application form. Any person 21 years of age or older residing in the City of Virginia Beach, or if a member of the United States Armed Forces domiciled in Virginia Beach, may apply for a 5 year permit to carry a concealed handgun.

Virginia Code §18.2-308.02 provides that any person at least 21 years of age may apply in writing to the clerk of the circuit court of the county or city of residence, or if a member of the United States armed forces, the county or city in which he is billeted, for a five-year permit to carry a concealed handgun.

Concealed Handgun Permits must be obtained from the county sheriff of your county of residence. If you are RENEWING a Concealed Handgun Permit, you MUST apply no more than 90 days PRIOR to the expiration date. The permit will be mailed to the address provided on the application once completed.

Depending on which county you are applying in, it may take 14 to 30 days for your application to be processed. Once it is processed, you will get a letter or email indicating whether your permit request was approved or denied. Pick up your permit as soon as possible if you were approved.

The permit is good for only a single gun purchase, however, with a concealed carry a person can buy multiple guns as long as the concealed carry is up to date. But, the Sheriff's Office doesn't offer a concealed carry class so those hoping to get one have to take the class from an outside source that offers it.

How do I apply for a resident Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit? Apply through the clerk's office of the circuit court in the city or county you reside. Some localities require fingerprinting, some don't. By law, the court must issue your permit within 45 days from the acceptance of your application.
