Fasting means you should not eat or drink anything except water for up to several hours or overnight before your test. This is done because nutrients and ingredients in food are absorbed in the bloodstream.

To collect a urine sample you should: label a sterile, screw-top container with your name, date of birth and the date. wash your hands (and genitals if possible) start to pee and collect either a "first-catch" or a "mid-stream" sample of urine in the container – you will be told which type to collect.

When visiting a Laboratory and Health Services Centre, you should bring the following with you: A completed and signed test requisition form from the healthcare professional who requested the test. Your provincial health card.

Before your test, make sure to drink plenty of water so you can give an adequate urine sample. However, drinking excessive amounts of water may cause inaccurate results. One or two extra glasses of fluid, which can include juice or milk if your diet allows, is all you need the day of the test.

Most routine test results are reported within 24 hours. Some tests require more time for processing or to allow for growth of microorganisms. These results can take several days or even weeks to report.
