The Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard v3 (ZCB-Design v3) is a one-time certification based on final design which helps ensure projects are designed to optimize reductions in both operational and embodied carbon.

CAGBC's Zero Carbon Buildingâ„¢ (ZCB) standards are a made-in-Canada framework that makes carbon the new measure of building innovation. Among the world's first zero-carbon building standards, they recognize the importance of building emissions in reaching national climate commitments.

Green buildings by 2050 To protect our environment and reduce the impacts of climate change, the Government of Canada has committed to reducing Canada's total GHG emissions to 40 to 45% below 2005 levels by 2030 and to reaching net-zero by 2050.

The Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard guides the design of new buildings and the retrofit of existing ones so they can achieve zero carbon operations. The Standard is comprehensive and evaluates the anticipated carbon emissions from building operations like heating and cooling.

ZCB-Design v3 establishes a clear path to zero operational carbon and a 40 percent reduction in new construction embodied carbon by 2030. Projects that registered under ZCB-Design v2 must submit for certification before September 30, 2024, or upgrade to version 3.

The Zero Carbon Building – Design (ZCB-Design) Standard is a made-in-Canada framework for designing and retrofitting buildings to achieve zero carbon. The second iteration of the Standard introduces greater rigour while increasing flexibility, to support the goal of transforming all buildings to be zero carbon.

'Net zero energy' requires a building to be 100% self-sufficient, relying entirely on on-site energy supply. Carbon neutral means that the net carbon emissions are zero, as the amount of carbon released is balanced by offsetting an equivalent amount.

Achieving ZCB-Performance certification means taking responsibility for all carbon emissions associated with building operations, and eliminating climate impacts. Using utility and other data sources, this certification evaluates building performance annually.
