Typically, the first movement you hear in a symphony is a fast one, which is indicated by a tempo marking such as allegro, Italian for “cheerful.” It's a brisk and lively pace, much like Calvin's after he got a job at McDonald's. Oftentimes, the opening movement sticks to what is known as form.

The Classical era (1750–1830) But the Classical (big C) era specifically refers to music composed between 1750 and 1830. Classical era music is sometimes even referred to as 'Viennese Classicism'. The city was a bustling hub of musical activity at the time, home to Gluck, Haydn, Salieri, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.

A prominent way to create unity and variety in musical compositions and improvisations is to use a theme or motive. A motive consists of a few notes that have distinct and memorable rhythmic and/or melodic content that is introduced at the beginning of a piece.

Classical music differs from modern music in that the musical language itself is often more formal and structured (and usually involves more than 4 chords). This style of music is often much more complicated involving multiple simultaneous musical ideas and more varied harmonic progressions.

Multiple movements: Nearly all symphonies use multiple movements with various tempos, keys, and tonalities. The Classical symphony form typically begins with an allegro rondo or in 4/4 time, with a slow second movement, a 3/4 minuet third movement, and another allegro rondo or as its fourth movement.

The first movement of a symphony is usually in a form called form and is often the most significant of the four movements. The second movement is usually slow and lyrical. The third movement is usually a dance, or sometimes a "Scherzo," which is a light, quick piece.

Symphony Structure The -allegro form was very popular during this time, and it became integral to the structure of the symphony. The -allegro form has three distinct sections: exposition, development and recapitulation.

The texture in the Classical period was primarily homophonic (whereas Baroque era works were polyphonic). The emphasis was on clearly defined phrases, tuneful melodies, flexible rhythms (less motoric than that of Baroque era music), more and varied dynamics and larger more standard and integrated orchestras.
