An EPC is a certificate that shows how energy efficient a property is. They are issued by a qualified EPC assessor and the EPC gives a rating from A (very efficient) to G (inefficient). Any properties that are rented need to have one.

Appliances are tested for how much energy they use during typical use. This gives them a rating on a scale of A to G, with A being the most efficient product of its class, and G being the least efficient. Some appliances use an older scale, from A+++ to G, with A+++ being the most efficient.

The ratings on the energy efficiency labels that run from A+++ to D (A+++ being the best, D being the poorest), are defined by the EU for each type of appliance through a number of different tests and criteria. This means the ratings can only be compared between one type of appliance.

This is why the A+, A++ and A+++ ratings were introduced. This means that the vast majority of fridge freezers on the market currently have an energy rating of E or F. What is this? So, compared to other fridge freezers on the market today, those that receive an F or G rating are the least efficient.

First introduced 20 years ago, energy labels awarded a product with an A for high efficiency, or an F for low efficiency and encouraged manufacturers to drive innovation by using more energy efficient technologies.

If your home has an EPC C rating it means it's been built using energy-efficient building methods or the home's fabric has been upgraded. Homes with floor, roof, walls and loft insulation, an efficient heating system, as well as double-glazing and low-energy lighting tend to achieve a C rating.
