(a) The number of packages of Class 7 (radioactive) materials in any transport vehicle or in any single group in any storage location must be limited so that the total transport index number does not exceed 50.

Radioactive Yellow-II: medium-level radiation levels detectable outside the package. Radioactive Yellow-III: highest radiation levels detectable outside the package. Fissile Label: applied to packages that contain fissile materials3.

Limits on Amount of Radioactivity for Shipping Individual packages cannot exceed 10 mrem/hr (0.1 mSv/hr) at 1 meter: transport index = 10. Non-exclusive use means normal conditions for a common carrier using open or closed vehicles that may be carrying other non-radioactive material.

Stay away from the package and do not touch it. Keep other people away from the package. Notify your supervisor. He or she will call for help.

RADIOACTIVE WHITE-I is the lowest category and RADIOACTIVE YELLOW-III is the highest. For example, a package with a transport index of 0.8 and a maximum surface radiation level of 0.6 millisievert (60 millirems) per hour must bear a RADIOACTIVE YELLOW-III label.

The maximum contact radiation level associated with this label is 0.5 mrem/hour. The Radioactive Yellow-II label is attached to packages with external contact radiation levels ranging from greater than 0.5 mrem/hour to no more than 50 mrem/hour.

Category 3. As defined by the IAEA, an amount of radioactive material which, if not safely managed or securely protected, could cause permanent injury to a person who handled it, or were otherwise in contact with it for some hours.

The standard placard for radioactive material is square-on-point and is yellow on top and white on the bottom, with black lettering and a black radiation symbol in the yellow portion. Standard size is approximately 11 x 11 inches. In the bottom corner, the DOT hazard class number “7” denotes radioactive material.
