Beginning July 1, 2020, most of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield's Affordable Care Act compliant, non-grandfathered health plans will cover pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication at 100% with no member cost share, when used for prevention of HIV and dispensed at an in-network pharmacy with a prescription.

Now, when a prescription comes into their PMS electronically, the system determines whether a PA is required and then transmits that PA request immediately to the physician. The pharmacy can do it all online without paper or faxes or phone calls.

A predetermination is a voluntary, written request by a provider to determine if a proposed treatment or service is covered under a patient's health benefit plan. Predetermination approvals and denials are based on our medical policies, coverage documents and benefits.

What is prior authorization? This means we need to review some medications before your plan will cover them. We want to know if the medication is medically necessary and appropriate for your situation. If you don't get prior authorization, a medication may cost you more, or we may not cover it.

Typically within 5-10 business days of hearing from your doctor, your health insurance company will either approve or deny the prior authorization request. If it's rejected, you or your doctor can ask for a review of the decision.

How long is the review process? A prior authorization decision may take up to 24 to 72 hours. How do I check the status of a prior authorization request? You can call the Member Services phone number on your member ID card from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday, or you can call your doctor's office.

You might be thinking, A pre-what? A predetermination of benefits is a review by your insurer's medical staff to decide if they agree that the treatment is right for your health needs. Predeterminations are done before you get care, so that you will know early if it is covered by your health insurance plan.

A prior authorization (PA), sometimes referred to as a pre-authorization, is a requirement from your health insurance company that your doctor obtain approval from your plan before it will cover the costs of a specific medicine, medical device or procedure.

Predetermination is not the same as pre-authorization. Pre-authorization is a required process for the doctor to get approval from BCBSIL before you are admitted to the hospital for routine care. Pre-authorization is also called pre-certification or pre-notification.

Call your physician and ensure they have received a call from the pharmacy. Ask the physician (or his staff) how long it will take them to fill out the necessary forms. Call your insurance company and see if they need you to fill out any forms.
