One common misconception about JUCO scholarships is that they do not offer full-ride scholarships. While this may be true for some individual JUCOs, it is not representative of the entire landscape. In fact, many junior colleges do offer full-ride scholarships for both academics and athletics.

While many of the state laws are similar, they do vary in some significant aspects. For example, California allows high school athletes and community college athletes to capitalize on their NIL, while most other states only allow students at four-year institutions to earn compensation.

Students are allowed to sign a letter of Intent with both the NJCAA and NCAA. This creates an exception of the rule that would require a student-athlete to receive a coach's permission to contact before transferring.

For instance, if you attend a two-year school (community college or junior college) and want to transfer to an NCAA Division I or II school, you may need to graduate first from your two-year school before you can compete at your new school.

On Jan. 1, 2023, the California Senate became the first state to allow students of any college level to receive NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals in Senate Bill 206, which includes community colleges.

As opposed to many Southern states, California has no state law-mandated restriction on what kind of endorsements these student athletes can accept. States like Texas have provisions in their NIL bills that prohibit athletes from working with companies like e-cigarette brands, alcohol, and sports gambling.

Seasons Allowed: Any student-athlete is allowed to play two seasons of each sport at the community college level. “Red Shirt”: A student-athlete who practices with the team and is academically eligible but does not participate in any contest for one full season of competition.

He said that although “the average NIL deal for Division 3 athletes that have an NIL deal is less than 100.00 per year,” he is intrigued about its future. “As the NIL landscape continues to change it will be interesting to see this evolve in our community and the support we receive.”
