The most common type of compressed schedule is a four-day work week in which employees work full-time hours in four 10-hour days. Another popular model of the compressed work week is the 5-4-9 work schedule, which is based on the two-week working period.

Alternate work schedules (AWS) is an umbrella term that refers to compressed work schedules and flexible work schedules. Compressed work schedule means a fixed work schedule (no flexible time bands) in which an employee can complete the biweekly work requirement in less than 10 working days.

Compressed work schedules provide a number of benefits to the employer, including a boost in employee morale, higher levels of productivity, operational cost savings, a reduction in employee absenteeism and tardiness, and reduced employee turnover.
