Florida state law requires septic tanks to be pumped by a state-licensed septage disposal company. Florida state guidance recommends septic tanks to be pumped every 3 to 5 years.

If you are considering putting in a septic system, the cost ranges from $3,600 to $10,000 with an average cost for septic tank installation is $6,300. Although less common for average homeowners, specialized systems on the high end may cost upwards of $20,000.

Permitting and Inspection If a homeowner is installing their own septic tank system for their private, single-family residence, they must still file and be approved for a construction permit and successfully pass the inspection performed by the state after construction to ensure the system is in compliance.

The law mandates that new construction permits for septic systems on lots of one acre or less in BMAP areas, as well as in Reasonable Assurance Plan (RAP) and Pollution Reduction Plan (PRP) areas, must now include Enhanced Nutrient Reduction Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (ENR-OSTDS).

Effective January 1, 2024, HB 1379 requires (in the Indian River Lagoon Protection Program area only), applicants for new septic systems serving lots of all sizes to a nitrogen-reducing system (ENR-OSTDS).

Contact the Statewide Headquarters of the Onsite Sewage Program. Regulatory authority for management of the Onsite Sewage Program (i.e., the septic tank program) has transferred from the Florida Department of Health (DOH) to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
