The short-term disability benefit will begin on the eighth day of your disability. If your claim is non-work-related, you must satisfy a one-year waiting period with your current employer before you are eligible for coverage under VSDP. Your eligibility for work-related disability coverage begins upon employment.

The Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP) provides income protection for state employees who can't work because of a non-work-related or work-related illness, injury or other condition, such as surgery, pregnancy, complications from pregnancy or a catastrophic or major chronic condition.

Core short-term disability (STD) provides a benefit of 60% of monthly salary, for a maximum of 180 days, after a 14-day elimination period. Core long-term disability (LTD) provides a monthly benefit of 60% of monthly salary, for a maximum of 12 months, after a 180-day elimination period.

You must be under the regular care of a licensed treating professional in order to be considered disabled. The VLDP long-term disability benefit begins after you have satisfied the short-term disability seven- calendar day elimination period and received 125 workdays of short-term disability benefits.

These employees are covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act (Title 2.2, § 2.2-2900 of the Code of Virginia), once they have completed the 12-month probationary period.

If your claim is approved, you will have up to 125 workdays of short-term disability coverage. Up to six weeks of post-partum income replacement following a normal delivery or C-section. Disability benefits will be increased to 80 percent of pre-disability income for a catastrophic condition.
