The first standard NACE SP0188 is a general standard for holiday testing providing procedures for both low and high-voltage testing of new coating on conductive substrates.

Coatings are usually applied in the 14-16 mil thicknesses providing a minimum of 15,000 volts of protection. At 125 volts per mil at 14 mils is 1750 volts. This will usually find holidays that are through the coating with exposed steel, assuming the coating is not cratered.

High voltage spark testers, like the PosiTest HHD operate at voltages up to 35,000V and are typically used on coatings more than 500 µm (20 mils) thick.

Holiday Detection Methods A general rule of thumb within the industry is acknowledged as 4 volts per micron of material being tested – for example, a coating or lining applied to a dry film thickness of 1mm (1000 microns) would be tested at 4kv [1000 microns x 4 volts].

The TQC High Voltage Holiday Detector or porosity test provides accurate detection of pinholes, flaws, inclusions, thin spots and bubbles in a coating. The gauge has been specifically designed to revolutionise high voltage DC testing of coatings, making it safer, easier and more reliable than previously possible.

NACE SP0188 provides a range of 8 to 185 mils (0.200 to 4.7 mm) coating thickness that is linear to a suggested voltage testing range of 1,500 to 15,000 volts.

Low-voltage holiday testing is used when the coating system is less than 500 microns (20 mils) thick. This is typically done using the wet sponge method. High-voltage holiday testing is used when the coating system is thicker and employs device producing a high voltage discharge.
