Screening for Scoliosis For scoliosis, each student is observed from the front, side and back: (a) while standing straight, and (b) while gradually bending forward, with the arms hanging down and palms touching, as if diving into a pool.

During a scoliosis screening exam known as the Adam's forward bend test, a child stands and folds forward at the waist as a pediatrician or nurse looks for the most common signs of scoliosis, such as uneven shoulders, a prominent shoulder blade, or an uneven waist.

The typical scoliosis screening age starts about age 10, as the screening is most helpful during an adolescent's growth spurt. If your health care provider detects a curve in the spine that needs treatment, a brace will often correct the condition at this age and can prevent the need for surgery later in life.

First, a clinician visually inspects the spine of a patient while the patient is standing upright. Next, the patient stands with feet together and bends forward at the waist with arms hanging and palms touching. The clinician repeats the visual inspection of the spine.

If your spine is curved, your doctor may use a tool called a scoliometer to estimate its angle. To see the curve more clearly, they'll order standing X-rays of your spine from the back and from the side. These images can be used to accurately measure the degree of your backbone's curve.
