Vermont's net metering rules provide electric companies with the authority to require energy efficiency audits for customers seeking to net metering systems if they are commercial or industrial customers or residential customers with historic energy consumption of 750 kWh or more per month.

Solar Incentives for Nonprofits and Businesses in Vermont Project leaders can receive up to a 24% tax credit for the Vermont-property portion of the investment. The Federal ITC also provides a 30% tax credit for non-tax-exempt businesses that elect to solar.

The Vermont credit can be taken in an amount equal to 27% of the federal tax credit allowed in the taxable year. This credit applies to personal income tax or business or corporate income tax. Any unused credit available may be carried forward up to 10 years.

There are three exemptions available for home and business renewable energy systems. These exemptions use the S-3E exemption certificate. To qualify, the item must be 1) tangible personal property 2) incorporated into a 3) net-metered system, as defined by 30 V.S.A.

“Net Metering” is the term used to describe how Vermonters can generate their own electricity and send what they don't use back onto the grid. If a net metered customer uses more electricity than is generated, the customer will pay the utility only for the difference.

The industry campaign “Save California Solar” says utilities are only against net metering because it “disrupts the utility monopoly and hurts their profits by allowing renters, schools, homeowners, farmers and others to use the sun for their own energy needs and to share it with their neighbors in exchange for a bill ...

Disadvantages of net metering Makes electricity pricier for homes that don't generate their own power. Can work to the disadvantage of low-income households and small businesses. Makes it harder for utilities to schedule power generation.

The Vermont Comprehensive Energy Plan (CEP) sets out a pathway for Vermont to obtain 90% of its energy from renewable sources by 2050. This ambitious goal calls on all citizens to take actions that will collectively transform the way we use and produce energy in our electric, transportation, and heating sectors.

About Net-Metering In Vermont, customers in the same utility service territory are allowed to form "groups" to share in the output of a net-metering system. The Public Utility Commission regulates the construction and operation of net-metering systems.

Vermont passed its own RES in 2015, mandating that its electric utilities source at least 75 percent of their sales from clean power by 2032. Today, Vermont claims to be nearing that goal, pointing to the fact that 66 percent of its electricity now comes from renewable resources.
