The Write Your Own (WYO) Program The WYO Program began in 1983 as a cooperative undertaking between the private insurance industry and FEMA, and allows participating property and casualty insurance companies to write and service the SFIP in their own names.

Since 1968, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has used flood insurance to empower Americans to protect the lives they've built. The National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 launches the NFIP with two primary goals: reducing future flood damage and protecting property owners.

The Write-Your-Own (WYO) Program The companies receive an expense allowance for policies written and claims processed, while the federal government retains responsibility for underwriting losses. The WYO Program operates as part of the NFIP and is subject to its rules and requirements.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) aims to reduce the impact of flooding on private and public structures by providing affordable insurance to property owners and by encouraging communities to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations.

The goals of the WYO Program are to: Increase the NFIP policy base and the geographic distribution of policies; Improve service to NFIP policyholders through the infusion of insurance industry knowledge; Provide the insurance industry with direct operating experience with flood insurance.

The General Property Form is used to insure five-or-more-family residential buildings and non-residential buildings. The Residential Condominium Building Association Policy Form is used to insure residential condominium association buildings.

A cooperative undertaking of the insurance industry and FEMA begun in October 1983. The Write Your Own (WYO) Program operates within the context of the NFIP and involves private insurance carriers who issue and service NFIP policies.
