Today the Oneida have four federally recognized nations: the Oneida Indian Nation in New York, the Oneida Nation in and around Green Bay, Wisconsin, in the United States; and two in Ontario, Canada: Oneida at Six Nations of the Grand River and Oneida Nation of the Thames in Southwold.

Government Policies The federal government allotted Oneida lands in the 1890s, but when the 25-year trust period expired, much of the land was bought by non-Indians. By 1920, only a few hundred acres remained in the possession of Oneida tribal members. The remainder of the 65,400 acres was owned by Whites.

After the war, Congress thanked the Oneida for their help and granted them war reparations. While the U.S. government punished Native American tribes that sided with the British, the Oneida were left in relative peace.

The sales tax rate is 8.75% on Nation Land located within Oneida County and 8.0% on Nation Land located within Madison County.

The Treaty of 1838 between the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin and the United States established the present day Oneida Reservation boundaries located in northeast Wisconsin and comprised of 65,430 acres.

Descendants are individuals born from enrolled Oneida members but who do not meet the eligibility requirements for enrollment with the Oneida Nation. To be recognized as a Descendant, documentation must prove that the individual lineally descends from an ancestor who is or was a member of the Oneida Nation.

To the present day, the Oneida Reservation has not been diminished or disestablished by an Act of Congress and our reservation boundaries as established by treaty continue to exist under the full force and effect of federal law and the United States Constitution.
