The Machine Readable Zone (MRZ for short) is the 2 lines of text at the bottom of the passport. If you look at your passport, the first line of the MRZ has a 3 letter abbreviation for your country, followed by your name (all separated by “<“).

The first 9 characters of the second line of the passport's machine-readable zone is the document number. Despite the fact that in most countries that use machine-readable zones in their documents, passport numbers are converted to a 9-digit form, in some cases, the total number of characters may be more or less.

Similarly, the Type 1 machine-readable zone has three lines, and each line has 30 characters. Type 3 MRZ comprises information like nationality, passport number, date of birth, sex, and passport expiration date, while in Type 1, letters A-Z and numbers 0 to 9 are included.

With ID cards, the first character in the MRZ indicates the type of document – I for ID card, P for passport, V for visa. Next is the country code and the three characters that indicate the country that issued the document. The country code is in ance with International Organization for Standardization standards.

If you're asking yourself, “is my passport biometric?” then the answer is as simple as looking at the front cover of your passport. To find out if your US passport is biometric, you'll find a unique symbol on your passport's front cover. If you have a biometric passport, you should be able to see the e-Passport symbol.

Difference Between Machine-Readable and Biometric Passports A biometric passport is a more advanced type of travel document, which has a microchip embedded inside the cover. Usually, an ePassport will also have machine-readable text on the identity page, whereas a machine-readable passport may not have a microchip.

Passport booklets The data of the machine-readable zone consists of two rows of 44 characters each. The only characters used are A–Z, 0–9 and the filler character <. In the name field, spaces, hyphens and other punctuation are represented by <, except apostrophes, which are skipped.
