Known by locals as "Salt Lake," Lake George is considered to be the deepest natural lake in North Dakota. Its depth, combined with its high concentrations of sodium and sulfate, make it unique -- and uniquely useful to a group of scientists who want to reconstruct the climate history of the region.

Devils Lake receives nearly all of its water from surface runoff and direct precipitation. Most surface-water runoff originates from a chain of remnant lakes located a few kilometers north of Devils Lake, although many of these smaller lakes have now merged with Devils Lake as the water levels rise.

Devils Lake is a 374 acre lake located in Sauk County. It has a maximum depth of 47 feet.
