Process Step 1: Applicant provides the Civil Officer the child's date of birth and mother's name. Step 2: A search is conducted for the birth record. Step 3: The Birth Certificate is issued to the applicant. Step 4: An application fee is collected from the Customer. Step 5: A receipt is issued to the customer.

Birth and Death Certificates Processing time: Two weeks (delivery by regular mail can take an additional two weeks). Allow an additional two weeks for long form birth certificates, birth certificates from 1910 to 1919, death certificates from 1949 to 1970, or for any other record that requires searching.

Mail requests ordered with priority handling ($45.00 per copy ordered) are currently processed within two (2) to four (4) weeks from when they are received. Submitting the application to the Vital Records Processing Center by overnight delivery is recommended.

Because funeral homes often help to prepare the death certificate, they can usually provide you with a few copies for a fee as well. You can also make a direct request from the local vital records office. It can take anywhere from two to four weeks to get a certified copy of a death certificate.

Only the spouse, parent, sibling, or child of the deceased may obtain a death certificate copy. Other persons must submit a New York State court order or documentation demonstrating that the death certificate copy is required to establish a lawful right or claim (see below).
