NCAA Bylaw 14 Guiding Statements/Principles. 1. Student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics are generally expected to earn a four-year degree within five years of initial collegiate enrollment. 2. Academic standards should facilitate a student-athlete's opportunity to earn a four-year degree.

To qualify for a Division I Medical Hardship Waiver: The athlete must have contemporaneous documentation from a medical professional that their injury or illness prevents them from being able to continue participating in their season.

Important Tip - If you need more assistance, call the NCAA Eligibility Center at 877-262-1492.

If an institution wishes to appeal the four-year period, the institution must submit a written request to the division-specific committee chair explaining its reason for relief. Cases will be reviewed by written record unless the chair determines a teleconference is warranted.

When a school discovers an NCAA rules violation has occurred, it must declare the prospective student-athlete or enrolled student-athlete ineligible and may request their eligibility be reinstated through the Requests/Self Reports Online (RSRO) system.

When Division I or II student-athletes fall short of these academic requirements, an institution can pursue a “progress-toward-degree” waiver to restore eligibility for competition. To qualify for such a waiver, institutions must document the mitigating circumstances that caused the deficiency.

A student-athlete's overall academic record meets automatic- waiver criteria or clearly demonstrates college preparedness (e.g., 12 core-course units with a 4.0 core-course GPA). units (max three-unit deficiency) with a 2.800 or higher core-course GPA in the final certification will receive an automatic IEW.
