Get Chapter 9single Beam Acoustic Depth Measurement Techniques Form

T technique in USACE for surveying river and harbor navigation projects. Acoustic depth sounding was first used in the Corps back in the 1930s but did not replace reliance on lead line depth measurement until the 1950s or 1960s. A variety of acoustic depth systems are used throughout the Corps, depending on project conditions and depths. These include single beam transducer systems, multiple transducer channel sweep systems, and multibeam sweep systems. Although multibeam systems are increasingl.

The bar check involves lowering a flat plate below the echo sounder transducer to several known depths below the surface and comparing the actual versus measured depth. As the bar is moved down, the sound velocity in the echo sounder is adjusted until the measured depth matches the actual depth.

The “Bar Check” is the field procedure for calibrating the MTES and SBES and involves a metal cone or plate device lowered to a maximum depth of 60 meters and recording the true depth versus the measured depth and compiling a depth correction table that will be used later to correct the measured depths.

Zero Adjustment or Draught setting control – the echo sounder will normally display the depth below the keel. This switch can be used to feed the ship's draught such that the echo sounder will display the total sea depth.

Within the sending/receiving unit is a means of measuring the time between the pulse sent out and the reflected echo from the bottom. Since the speed of sound in water is known, the simple equation "d/2 = vt" is used to find the depth "d".

The IHO Standards for Hydrographic Surveys (S-44) requires that hydrographic surveys account for sound speed uncertainties in order to determine the Total Propagated Uncertainty. If variations in sound speed are significant, the horizontal and vertical position of a sounding can vary by as much as several meters.

With most agencies the method used to check echo-sounders is the bar check. This method is quite satisfactory, and indeed is the ultimate, in shallow water down to the deepest depth at which a good clear echo can be obtained from the bar.

The echo-sounder comprises a transmitter, transducer, receiver amplifier and timebase/display.

The single beam echo sounder is used as a measuring instrument for the detection of larger areas in a short time. An acoustic signal is emitted by a sensor to the bottom of the lake and the transit time to the arrival of the echo is measured. Depending on the frequency used, different soil horizons are recorded.
