Can I use my boat in Texas if it is registered in another state? If you have a vessel registered or titled in your name in another state you may operate the vessel up to 90 consecutive days with current out-of-state registration.

TPWD is required by law to collect tax for vessels/boats (115 feet or less in length) and outboard motors purchased in Texas or brought into Texas on or after January 1, 2000. The tax rate is 6.25% of the sales price.

Does a Boat Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in Texas? The state of Texas does not require a notary public's certification for boat sales but it is generally a good idea to have a notary or witness to a sale in order to confirm the transaction has taken place.

A: Yes, if the boat is registered in the customer's name, they can operate the vessel for up to 90 consecutive days with current out-of-state registration. However, Use Tax is due upon arrival in Texas.

You must transfer your registration and title within 90 days and pay use tax or new resident tax, as applicable, within 45 working days. I bought a boat and/or outboard motor that's registered and/or titled in another state.

In Texas, a bill of sale or an invoice of some kind is required for any transfer of vessel ownership.

The seller must complete the tax affidavit portion of form PWD 143 and/or form PWD 144, sign and date each. If the boat or outboard motor is required to be titled, the seller must provide either the MSO, Texas title OR out--of-state title/registration (whichever is appropriate by that state).

Registration decals: $22. Certificate of title: $27. Tax: 6.25% of the sale price.
