A socket is an interface between a residual limb (stump) and a prosthetic device. This custom-made sleeve fits snugly around the end of the residual limb. It creates a suction seal that allows the prosthesis to distribute an amputee's weight and facilitates fluid, comfortable movement.

The socket acts as the interface between the body and prosthesis, facilitating load bearing (1) and proprioception in lower-limb devices. In myoelectric prostheses, the socket houses electrodes which allow the transmission of control signals (10).

What Are Prosthetic Sockets Made Of? Today's prosthetic sockets are made from modern plastic and silicone materials as they offer a good mixture of comfort and functionality for the patient. It's also common to see materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, carbon, and titanium in prosthetic connective componentry.

Conical. This feature is designed to provide a much more comfortable and intimate liner fit for amputees with conical-shaped residual limbs. The conical shape incorporates a series of vertical waves intended to reduce pressure and help prevent the edges of the proximal end from rolling down.

Prosthetic liners exist to improve amputee safety and comfort by adding a cushioning layer between the residual limb and the prosthetic socket. Many choices in liner technology are available, and clinicians often rely on personal intuition and experience to choose which liners are appropriate for which patients.

Prosthetic liners serve two basic functions: skin protection and suspension of the limb. They are made of three base materials that aid with this function: urethane, silicone, and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).

There are two main types of sockets for above knee (transfemoral) prosthetics (Quadrilateral and Ischial containment) however our prosthetists are always on the lookout for new methods.

Introduction: The prosthetic socket is the connecting part between the stump and the prosthesis, which is the important basis for the function of the prosthesis. The current prosthetic socket is difficult in meeting the needs of amputees current, which is the main reason for amputees abandoning their prostheses.
