California law allows candidates running for a federal or state office to have a candidate statement included in the state Voter Information Guide, on the Secretary of State website, or in certain cases, in the county Voter Information Guide, depending on the office.

The federal campaign finance law defines “political party” as a committee or organization whose nominated or selected candidates for federal office appear on the ballot as the party's candidates. However, ballot access is governed by state law.

A write-in candidate is a candidate whose name does not appear on the ballot but seeks election by asking voters to cast a vote for the candidate by physically writing in the person's name on the ballot.

A recipient committee is required to file a Statement of Organization (Form 410), which provides the public with information about the purpose of the committee and identifies the committee's treasurer and principal officer(s). The Form 410 is also required to be filed in order to terminate the committee.

A candidate, or nominee, is the prospective recipient of an award or honor, or a person seeking or being considered for some kind of position; for example: to be elected to an office — in this case a candidate selection procedure occurs. to receive membership in a group.

State Senate and Assembly candidates, who choose to keep their campaign spending under specified dollar limits, may purchase space in the county Voter Information Guide for a 250-word candidate statement (Government Code section 85601(c)).

The contribution limits provided below reflect the dollar amounts as adjusted for the period starting January 1, 2023. Caucus Committees: A person may not contribute more than $48,875.00 in a calendar year to a House or Senate Caucus Committee.

Federal law formally allows for two types of PACs: connected and non-connected. Judicial decisions added a third classification, independent expenditure-only committees, which are colloquially known as "Super PACs".
