Another difficulty you may have when using a voucher is that not all landlords will be willing to accept a voucher. It is legal for them to refuse to accept vouchers. But it is illegal for a landlord to refuse to rent to you because you have a disability.

Your landlord may not end your lease, raise your rent, or cut your services without proper written notice. Your landlord may not evict you or retaliate against you (get back at you) for complaining or standing up for your rights as a tenant. In Minneapolis and many other cities, a landlord has to have a rental license.

Property owners who wish to rent out their single-family home, duplex, townhome or condo must apply for an annual business license before a tenant moves in. This requirement applies to any dwelling unit that is not owner-occupied, including dwelling units which are vacant or occupied by a relative of the owner.

As of Jan. 1, landlords must give renters 14 days' notice before filing an eviction; include all required fees in the advertised rent; ensure units maintain a temperature of at least 68 degrees during the winter; and provide tenants 24 hours' notice before entering a unit.

General rules. We require a rental license for any dwelling unit where the owner is not occupying the unit, even if: No rent is paid. The unit is occupied by a relative.
