Minnesota House Democrats passed a bill late Thursday night that requires businesses of all sizes to provide workers with six paid sick days off per year.

Employers are not required to provide personal sick leave benefits. However, some employers are required to allow eligible employees to be absent from work under the federal Family Medical Leave Act or provisions of the Minnesota Pregnancy and Parental Leave Law. The law does not require that sick leave be paid.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The DFL-led Minnesota House on Thursday passed a proposal requiring Minnesotans get paid time off of work if they're sick or their safety is at risk. Employees would accrue up to 48 hours, or six days, of paid time off, which could carry over if unused, but not exceed 80 hours in a single year.

In general terms, the law requires employers to provide and allow employees to use at least 24 hours or three days of paid sick leave per year. Employers adopting new policies to comply with the law may choose whether to have an “accrual” policy or a “no accrual/up front” policy.

Minnesota workers could accumulate earned sick and safe time to take care of themselves or a loved one under a bill that the House of Representatives passed Thursday evening. Under the proposal, an employee could earn up to one hour of time off for every 30 hours they work with a cap of 48 hours each year.

PAID SICK LEAVE/TIME OFF The law does not require that sick leave be paid. However, if the employer provides paid time off for the illness or injury of the worker, time off for the illness or injury of a family member must also be paid.

Sick and safe time accrues in increments of whole hours, not fractions of an hour. Upon completion of every 30 hours worked, an employee accrues at least one additional hour of sick and safe time. Employers may exceed this minimum standard by recording time in fractions of an hour if they choose.
