Costs of extended warranties and/or maintenance agreements, which can be separately identified from the cost of the equipment, should not be capitalized.

A warranty expense refers to the cost that a company anticipates incurring for the replacement or repair of products customers purchase. Companies account for warranty expenses only during the established warranty period. After the warranty period expires, companies cease to incur the warranty expense.

To estimate the warranty expense for a company, we need to know three main things: Number of units sold during a particular accounting period. Percentage of the sold products that will probably need a repair or a replacement based on previous experiences. Average cost of repairing or replacing products under warranty.

If the company can reasonably estimate the amount of warranty claims likely to arise under the policy, it should accrue an expense that reflects the cost of these anticipated claims. The accrual should take place in the same reporting period in which the related product sales are recorded.

By my calculations, a product with a 1 year warranty will be covered for 1 year. 1=1. Or 1 year=12 months=365 days=8760 hours. One with a 90 day warranty will be covered for 90 days.
