OBJECTIVE: Design and construct an art mobile around a general theme using physics to calculate the mobile's rotational equilibrium (equal torques on each side of balancing arm).

The way you find the torque from a given force is you take r, the distance from the axis to where that force is applied and you multiply by the amount of force, as long as it's that amount of force that runs perpendicular to this lever arm or this r direction. Be careful that torque is a vector.

Torque is defined as Γ=r×F=rFsin(θ). In other words, torque is the cross product between the distance vector (the distance from the pivot point to the point where force is applied) and the force vector, 'a' being the angle between r and F.

To calculate torque of individual items students mass each object. Students then change the mass of their objects to forces by converting to kilograms and multiplying by 9.8 m/s2 (the acceleration due to gravity). Students then multiply this force by the distance the object is from the pivot point.

τ = Fd =mgd =mass x gravity x distance Where F = Force (Newtons) d = lever arm length/distance from center of mass (meters) • Torques must be equal to achieve balance.

How is torque measured? The SI unit for torque is the Newton-meter. In imperial units, the Foot-pound is often used.
